Highlight Park is a small district on the northern outskirts of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan in south Wales. It is a circular housing estate built in the 1970s by Wimpy Homes. The area has a Tesco supermarket, a chemist, a community centre, a doctors' surgery and a fire station which was built before the housing complex. Nearby locations include Barry Comprehensive School, built in the 1960s and Bryn Hill Golf Course which runs around half of the lower half of the estate which overlooks the Vale of Glamorgan.
Highlight Park expanded in 1988 with the building of the Tesco complex and an additional sub housing estate Hunter's Ridge. Plans for further expansion of 500 new homes was announced in 1995 on current farmland but substantial petitioning resulted in proposals being rejected.
The area also has a farm known as Highlight Farm which is over five hundred years old and is owned by the Lakin family who have owned the land in the area for centuries. Cyril Lakin Senior (1893-1948) was once a Conservative Party Member of Parliament.[1] The Lakin family sold further land to Brynhill Golf Club in 1994 during their expansion.
Construction started in 2006 on a new GP surgery to serve North Barry, replacing two existing surgeries in Holton Road and Salisbury road. The surgery is on land behind the existing community centre and opened October/November time in 2007.
Nearby districts include Colcot and Cwm Talwg.
